SUFFOLK, AMPTON, SUNDAY MARCH 13
GOING: GOOD (GOOD TO FIRM IN PLACES)

Report

David Kemp and Tim Bryce, trainers of Cantarinho and Placid Man, the two East Anglian hopes for the upcoming Cheltenham Foxhunters, got a boost before Friday's big race when saddling winners at the Suffolk Point-To-Point at Ampton on Sunday.

In Kemp's case, he landed a hat-trick, all self-ridden, taking his tally for the season to nine, well clear of his nearest rival in the East Anglian Jockeys' title race.

Madmidge got the ball rolling when surviving a final fence howler to lift the opening Members Race. This triumph, his fourth of the campaign, means that he is joint top of the nationwide standings for the Horse & Hound Trophy, presented annually to the horse who wins the most races in the season.

The Kilverstone-based pilot followed up aboard Deckie, who won his first Men's Open and his third race for 2005 when proving much too strong for his five rivals in a Land Rover-sponsored contest.

The treble was completed when Baron Halebop brought to an end owner-breeder Alec Byrne's 27-year wait for a winner when lifting the first division of the Open Maiden.

Byrne, from Winter Paddock Stud, Old Buckenham, has been trying for that elusive success ever since he bought Baron Halebop's granddam way back in 1978. His moment of glory came as the eight-year-old gelding held off the persistent challenge of Manhatton Storm by two lengths.

The Bryce-trained winner was McAttack, who got the better of a thrilling tussle with John The Mole to win the Restricted race by a hard-fought neck.

McAttack had been off the course for three years prior to this season and Bryce, who hails from Newmarket, joked: "He has stopped being a hack and decided to be a racehorse again this year!"

The result left winning owner, Helen Colletta, from Balsham near Cambridge, in raptures of delight as it fulfilled a lifelong ambition. She revealed: "My husband bought him for me in 2000 but then we had foot and mouth and I have just been hacking around the roads on him."

"But we decided to give racing another try. I just can't believe he has won - I can die happy now!"

Little Worsall and Badgers Glory, who shared a horsebox up from Brightling in Sussex, plundered the Ladies' Open and the second division of the Maiden respectively.

The Ladies' Open was a great race, with the Hannah Grissell-ridden Little Worsall simply refusing to be overtaken and eventually denying Millenium Way by a neck. But it was a humbling experience for the local horses, as the first four places were all filled by horses from south of the Thames.

Little Worsall is trained by Charlotte Marshall, while Badgers Glory, who employed front-running tactics to similar effect, is in the care of Marshall's neighbour, Zoe Anthony.

The Confined Race provided another tight finish, with Mister Ringa, trained at Bishops Stortford by Christopher Sporborg and ridden by Andrew Braithwaite, holding off Dunmanus Bay by three-quarters of a length with King Plato close behind.

A most enjoyable day was rounded off by two children's flat pony races. The riding honours went to Bridget Andrews, daughter of former top jockey, Simon Andrews, from near Luton, and Adam Beschizza, from Exning near Newmarket.
