DUNSTON HARRIERS, AMPTON, SUNDAY JANUARY 16
|
Report
No Nay Never is the name of the horse, and perhaps his name summed up the thoughts of jockey Annie Bowles about the timing of her first winner prior to their assignment in the second division of the Maiden Race at the Dunston Harriers Point-To-Point at Ampton on Sunday.
Bowles, a 19-year-old Equine Science student from Rushall, near Harleston, had been trying for four years and some 40-odd rides to break her duck in the saddle. But all those defeats were forgotten as No Nay Never powered up the final hill to beat Willy Boy by two lengths.
"I growled at him a lot, but never had to hit him with the whip!" beamed Bowles, who is in her first year at Bristol University.
No Nay Never is trained at Chediston, near Halesworth by John Ibbott and was carrying the colours of Bowles' proud father, Jeffrey. Bowles senior is an auctioneer with Diss-based Thomas William Gaze and this was a richly deserved moment of glory for a man who recently retired after 20 years of service as clerk of the scales at Higham Point-To-Point course.
Another man who gained a little payback after giving so much to the sport was Brian King, from Fersfield, near Diss. King was presented with a silver photo frame to mark his 20 years as secretary of this meeting which, in conjunction with Julia Howlett, he has breathed new life into in the past few years.
And it is easy to guess which picture he uses to fill the frame after Madmidge, partly-owned by King, gave East Anglia's joint champion jockey of 2004, David Kemp, from Kilverstone near Thetford, his first victory of the season when taking the Confined Race.
James Owen, the other joint champion, suffered rather worse fortune and remains winless for the current campaign. He bruised a shoulder on his first ride of the day and, wisely opting to sit out the rest of the action, could only watch as his good friend, Matt Mackley, proved an able substitute aboard Runningwiththemoon in the Restricted Race.
Runningwiththemoon is trained in Bedfordshire by Mike Burman but much of the work on him has been done by Owen and his girlfriend, Kelly Smith, who share a house in Newmarket.
Indeed, Runningwiththemoon was originally bought by owner Ray Newby to be ridden by Smith in Ladies' races, only for her to be sidelined with a shoulder injury of her own. Runningwiththemoon is a first ever horse for Newby, a civil servant and pointing fanatic from Bury St Edmunds, and he was almost speechless afterwards, saying: "I can't believe it - it's feels like I've won the Cheltenham Gold Cup."
Another highly popular local success came in the Intermediate Race as Bunratty's Sole, carrying the colours of Wymondham farmer Dick Fryer, scored in taking style under his trainer, Nibby Bloom.
The rest of a highly enjoyable eight-race card was dominated by the powerful Northamptonshire yard of Caroline Bailey, who landed a treble. Round The Isles, who is owned by his breeder, Paul Rackham, from Bridgham, near Thetford, got the Bailey ball rolling when edging out Earl of Buckingham in a thrilling finish to the opening Maiden.
Then Choral Dream came from a seemingly hopeless position with half a mile to run to shock the odds-on favourite, Gallant Glen, in the Men's Open race and the trio was completed in grand style when Persian Hero led home a 1-2 for the yard in the Novice Riders' Race.
Persian Hero was having his initial start for Bailey and was a first winner for 23-year-old jockey, John Russell, who works as pupil assistant to top National Hunt trainer Nicky Henderson.
Finally, Surrey raider Cedar Chief was a prolific winner last year and looks set for more trophy-plundering after a convincing five-length defeat of Millenium Way in the Ladies' Open.
