SUFFOLK, AMPTON, SUNDAY MARCH 17
going good to soft with soft patches. by James Crispe
Report
The Turners were among the winners again on their home course at the Suffolk meeting at Ampton yesterday (Sunday), as the fast-improving Pampered Gale beat Kingfisher Star by ten lengths in the Restricted Race. Andrew Sansome, who rode Bruan, was board again here and he went on to complete a weekend treble when Lord Drakkar edged home by half a length in the first of two Maiden races.
Lord Drakkar is trained at Carlton by Julie Read and is owned by an enthusiastic four-man syndicate headed by Soham postman Roy Green.
The other Maiden was even closer, with Holy Moses getting up in the very last strides to beat Grey Fusilier by a head and give 26- ear-old Rachel Barrow, from Newmarket, a deserved first East Anglian victory and only the second of her riding career. Holy Moses is trained at Herringswell Stud by Eric Cantillon.
Tea Box maintained his unbeaten record since joining the Kilverstone yard of Malcolm and Celia Kemp when landing the Members' Race and, in a day of tight finishes, Sam Hodge needed all her skill in the saddle to get Thurles Pickpocket home by half a length from
the Barrow-ridden Mister Audi in the Ladies' Open.
Thurles Pickpocket, trained at Raydon, near Hadleigh, by George Cooper and Cherie Cunningham, won despite hating the very sticky ground and the same can be said for Fair Exchange, who needed to be driven out by Paul Taiano to land the odds in the Land Rover Men's Open.
The Confined Race went to Village Copper, trained at Glemsford by Ruth Hayter, who responded to the vigorous riding of Christian Ward-Thomas to beat Native Status by three lengths.
