David Kemp was the man to follow at the West Norfolk Point-To-Point meeting at Fakenham on Sunday. The 23-year-old jockey from Kilverstone, near Thetford, had his first treble and, with a bit more luck, might have taken his winning tally to five.
Two of the Kemp triumphs - aboard Camden Loch and Second Thoughts - came courtesy of William Wales, from Binham in North Norfolk, who only retired after a successful career in the saddle earlier this year but is still proving his talent as a trainer.Second Thoughts justified odds-on favouritsm with the minimum of fuss in the Members' Race while Camden Loch completed a first and last race double when delivered with a well-timed challenge to beat Young Tribune in the older horse Maiden.
The Kemp trio was completed by Watchowillie, who scuppered a gamble on the runner-up, Mr Mighty, to lift the Men's Open race. Watchowillie is trained by Kemp's parents, Malcolm and Celia Kemp.His part owner, Ian Low, from Clacton, revealed afterwards that the nine-year-old has a steel pin in his fetlock which clearly does not affect his enthusiasm for the game.
The fawn and white checked Wales colours might have paid a third visit to the winner's enclosure after the other Maiden Race. But First And Fourmost crashed out through the wing of the final fence just as he and Kemp were challenging the eventual winner, Present Moment.His part owner, Ian Low, from Clacton, revealed afterwards that the nine-year-old has a steel pin in his fetlock which clearly does not affect his enthusiasm for the game.
Trained at Glemsford by Ruth Hayter and ridden by Nick Moore, Present Moment was left to come home eight lengths clear of Bell Rock and Manhatton Storm.
Hayter was completing a double as she had earlier turned out Cinnamon Club to score a bloodless victory in the Ladies' Open under Amy Stennett.The tightest finish of the day came in the Restricted Race and again Kemp was involved, this time aboard Run Monty.
The hot favourite, Mai Knight, ran no kind of race and eventually pulled up lame, leaving Denis Compton to get home by a head from Run Monty, whose chances were compromised by a mistake at the second last.A gift horse to owner-trainer Di Pyper, from Brent Pelham, Denis Compton was ably handled by Andrew Braithwaite.
The Turner family, from Ampton near Bury St Edmunds, had been on the mark with Persian Hero at Penshurst in Kent on Saturday and took their score for the season to 17 when the James Owen-ridden Millenium Way proved three lengths too strong for his market rival, Minino, in the Confined Race.
